12 November 1881 - Manchester's Heathens and Saints

On 12 November 1881, Newton Heath FC defeated hosts West Gorton (St. Mark's) FC, 3-0, in a friendly. It was the first Manchester derby, as the Heathens later became known as Manchester United and the Saints later changed their name to Manchester City. The Ashton Reporter covered the match, calling it "a pleasant game."

With that first match, played at the invitation of West Gorton, there have been a total of 168 contests between the two teams. United currently have the advantage with 69 wins to City's 49 (there have been 50 draws). The derby's top scorers is United's Wayne Rooney with 11, while City's Joe Hayes and Francis Lee are tied for second at 10 goals each. 

A number of players have taken the pitch for both City and United, including Denis Law, Peter Schmeichel, and, most recently, Carlos Tevez.

City are currently on a four-match derby win streak, with United's last derby victory coming on 9 December 2012.

3 April 1905 - Living La Vida Boca

On 3 April 1905, Club Atletico Boca Juniors was founded in the La Boca neighborhood of Buenos Aires by five Italian immigrants - Esteban Baglietto, Juan Farenga, Teodoro Farenga, Santiago Sana, and Alfredo Scarpati. The first match was played on 21 April 1905. The photo above is the first-known photograph of Boca Juniors, taken in 1906.

Boca Juniors play in blue and yellow, which the club reportedly patterned after the colors of the Swedish flag. Prior to that, Boca played in shirts with black and white vertical stripes, which were also used by another local club. In 1906, the two clubs played a match, with the winner keeping the stripes. Boca lost, and decided to use the colors of the first ship to sail into port at Buenos Aires, which was a Swedish freighter. Thus Boca adopted their now-famous blue and yellow kits.

Boca won their first title - the Argentinian amateur championship - in 1919, starting a series of successes that now includes 32 domestic and 18 international trophies, making them one of the most decorated clubs in history. Their achievements include four Intercontinental Cup/FIFA Club World Cup titles (in 1977, 2000, 2003, and 2007).

A number of international stars have played for Boca, including Juan Roman Riquelme (1995-2002 and again from 2007-present), Carlos Tevez (2001-04) and Argentine football legend Diego Maradona (1981-82, 1995-97).

27 October 2012 - In Retrospect, Thirteen Minutes Doesn't Seem So Long

On 27 October 2012, Manchester City beat Swansea 1-0 in what turned out to be the longest game in Premier League history.

The defending league champions, Manchester City entered the match sitting third in the table on the back of an undefeated record of five wins and three draws. Swansea, meanwhile, had just climbed into tenth after getting their only win in their last six, so few people expected them to put up much of a fight at the Etihad.

But the hosts were off their game for most of the day, suffering from an apparent hangover after losing to Ajax in the Champions League three days earlier. The only highlight for either team was Carlos Tevez's strike in the 30th minute that put City up 1-0.

The lowlights were more numerous, however, as both teams lost players to injury—defender Micah Richards for Manchester City (pictured) and keeper Michael Vorm for Swansea. Richards tore a meniscus in his knee and was sidelined for four months, while Vorm was out for eight weeks.

The injuries to Richards and Vorm delayed the game for lengthy spells, leading to a total of thirteen minutes of stoppage time, making the game the longest in the Premier League.

14 July 2009 - Tévez Sings The Blues

On 14 July 2009, Carlos Tévez switched sides in Manchester, leaving United to sign for City in a deal worth £25.5 million.

The Argentinian forward had joined United on loan from West Ham two years earlier. Over the course of those two seasons, he scored made 99 appearances across all competitions, scoring 34 goals and winning two Premier League titles, the Champions League, and the FIFA Club World Cup.

At the expiration of his two-year loan, United offered him a permanent deal, but Tévez had grown frustrated with a perceived lack of playing time and declined the offer, instead signing with United's rivals, City.

He spent four years at Manchester City where he scored 73 goals in 138 appearances and won the 2011 FA Cup and 2012 league title. His success was overshadowed, however, by a lengthy suspension in the middle of the 2011-12 season after he refused to come on as a late substitute in a Champions League match against Bayern Munich.

In June 2013, he moved to Juventus for a fee of £10M, with another £2M in incentives.
