18 February 1973 - The Role Came A Little Bit Later

On 18 February 1973, Claude Makélélé, who redefined the modern defensive midfielder position, was born in Kinshasa, Zaire.

He moved to France when he was four and spent the first several years of his career there, first with Stade Brestois (1990-91), then with Nantes (1991-97) and later Marseille (1997-98). In 1998, he left for Spain, playing two seasons for Celta de Vigo and three for Real Madrid.

At Madrid, he was an integral member of the Galacticos side assembled by club president Florentino Pérez, including Zinedine Zidane, Luis Figo, Ronaldo, and Roberto Carlos. Although not regarded as highly (or paid as much) as some of the others, Makélélé drove the side by operating less like a traditional defensive midfielder and more like a deep-lying playmaker.

When he left for Chelsea in 2003, a bitter Pérez tried to minimize the loss, downplaying Makélélé's contribution to the team. But after winning two league titles (and the Champions League) with him, Real Madrid did not win La Liga again until 2007.

Makélélé, meanwhile, flourished at Chelsea, winning two league titles and one FA Cup before moving back to France in 2008, joining Paris Saint-Germain. He ended his career there, retiring in 2011.

26 November 2003 - Milan's Maldini Makes His Mark

On 26 November 2003, Milan defeated Ajax 1-0 in a Champions League group stage match before a crowd of 50,000 at Ajax's Amsterdam ArenA. The match was the 100th European Cup/Champions League appearance for Milan defender Paolo Maldini and the fourth time the two teams had met in the Champions League in 2003.

Maldini signed with Milan as a youth player in 1978, then as a professional in 1984. He made his first European Cup appearance in the 1988-89 campaign, which saw Milan claim its third title in the competition. By November 2003, Milan and Maldini had claimed three more European Cup/Champions League trophies (1990, 1994, 2003).

Ajax and Milan had a long history together in the competition, dating back to the 1969 Final in which Milan beat the Dutch club 4-1. Ajax returned the favor in the 1995 Final with a 1-0 win over the Italians. The clubs met in the quarterfinals of the 2002-03 Champions League, with Milan emerging victorious by the aggregate score of 3-2.

Maldini's century match was the second leg of the 2003-04 group stage, with Milan having won the previous leg 1-0 at home. In Amsterdam, Ajax battled to 0-0 draw at the break, despite having had to withdraw their star forward Zlatan Ibrahimović in the 40th minute due to injury. In the 51st minute, Milan striker Andriy Shevchenko chested a Cafu pass in front of the goal and calmly put the ball into the net. Milan then held on for the 1-0 win.

Both Ajax and Milan lost their last group stage matches, Ajax to Brugge and Milan to Celta Vigo. Ajax's loss to Brugge dropped the Dutch club to the bottom of the table and out of the competition. Milan finished at the top of the table to advance to the knockout rounds where they successfully defended their title.

11 November 2008 - Real Madrid Gets Romo'd

On 11 November 2008, Spanish third division side Real Unión Club de Irún lost away to Real Madrid, 3-4, in the Round of 32 of the Copa del Rey. Thanks to their 3-2 win in the first leg, however, Irún advanced on an aggregate 6-6 score with a 3-2 advantage in away goals.

Irún had already been tested in the cup with early-round wins over CD Lugo (0-3), UE Sant Andreu (2-1), and Barakaldo CF (2-1). Real Madrid, on the other hand, was playing their first match of the tournament, entering the competition in the Fourth Round.

The match was even at 2-2 in the second half, when Real Madrid substitute Alberto Bueno put his team ahead with a goal in the 69th minute. Real Madrid captain Raúl appeared to secure the Blancos' advancement with an 85th-minute strike--his third of the match--but a defensive miscue gave Irún another chance and midfielder Arangoa Eneko Romo scored the decisive goal in the 90th minute.

It was the first time in Real Madrid's history that they were eliminated by a third division side at home. History soon repeated itself, however, as the Blancos were eliminated from the 2009-10 Copa del Rey in the Fourth Round by third division side AD Alcorcón.

Irún's moment of glory was fleeting, as they were eliminated by Real Betis in the Fifth Round, 2-0. In 2009, they were knocked out in the Second Round by second division side RC Celta de Vigo, 2-1.

24 February 2004 - Much Edu About Something

On 24 February 2004, Arsenal beat Celta Vigo 2-3 in the Champions League with players named Edu scoring for both sides.

The meeting came in the Round of 16, with Celta hosting the first leg. Although Arsenal were in the midst of an unbeaten league season, they had never won a game in Spain under manager Arsène Wenger. They took an early lead, however, when their Brazilian midfielder Edu scored in the 18th minute.

The lead lasted only nine minutes, though, as Celta's own Brazilian Edu brought the hosts level. Then, in the 58th minute, Arsenal's Edu struck again to restore the lead, followed by another quick equalizer, this time by Celta Vigo midfielder José Ignacio in the 64th minute. The visitors finally captured the lead for good with an 80th-minute strike from Robert Pirès.

Neither Edu scored in the second leg, which the Gunners won 2-0 to advance 2-5 on aggregate. They went on to lose to Chelsea in the quarterfinals, but consoled themselves by winning the league.

31 December 1939 - Spain's Mighty Sansón

On 31 December 1939, Celta de Vigo defender Sansón became the youngest player in Spanish league history when he debuted against Sevilla.

Francisco Baos Rodríguez, nicknamed "Sansón" because of his strength, was in his first season with Celta and was 15 years, 8 months, and 11 days old when manager Ricardo Comesaña gave him his first call-up to the first team for their away match at Sevilla to close out the year. It was a good start for Sansón, as Celta won 4-1, but he was unable to make it last, with only five other league appearances before leaving the team in 1941.

Sansón later made a greater impact with Oviedo, with 115 appearances between 1945 and 1950, then returned to Celta, where he played in another 40 league matches in four seasons. He spent his last season with Xerez, then retired in 1956.

18 August 2012 - Wasting No Time To Make An Impact

On 18 August 2012, Málaga's Fabrice Olinga became the youngest goalscorer in La Liga history (and got the match-winner as well).

After finishing fourth in the league the previous season, financial pressures forced Málaga to sell off several players, including star midfielder Santi Cazorla and their 2011-12 top scorer Salomón Rondón. They also lost striker Ruud van Nistlerooy to retirement, forcing manager Manuel Pellegrini to make some changes for the 2012-13 season.

For their opener against Celta Vigo, Málaga started with Sebastián Fernández as the lone forward, but with the game still scoreless in the 60th minute, Pellegrini replaced him with Olinga. Twenty-four minutes later, Olinga scored the game's only goal. He was 16 years and 98 days at the time, breaking the previous record of 16 years and 289 days, set by Athletic Bilbao's Iker Muniain in October 2009.

Despite the successful debut, Olinga made only five other appearances for Málaga's senior team that season and did not score again.
