20 February 2005 - Fenerbahçe Shoots For Seven

On 20 February 2005, Fenerbahçe matched their record scoreline, beating Kayserispor 7-0.

The club had hit that margin four times previously, first in a 7-0 win over Denizlispor in the 1984-85 season, followed by a pair of 8-1 victories over Samsunspor (in 1993-94) and Kayserispor (in 1994-95) and another 7-0 win over Denizlispor in 1996-97.

In February 2005, they were challenging for the league title, sitting one point behind leaders Galatasaray with a game in hand when they hosted Kayserispor, who were in seventeenth place out of eighteen teams.

Fenerbahçe took some time to get going, taking a 1-0 lead into the break with a goal from Ümit Özat (23'). But they rolled in the second half, with strikes from Alex (56'), Tuncay Şanlı (59'), Mert Nobre (68', 70'), Mehmet Aurélio (81'), and Serhat Akin (89'). In addition to scoring, Alex notched two assists, with Mehmet Aurélio and Özat had one each.

The win propelled Fenerbahçe to the top of the table, where they remained for the rest of the season to capture their sixteenth league title.

13 April 2005 - Apparently, Not All Brazilian Footballers Have Cool Names

On 13 April 2005, PSV Eindhoven beat Lyon 4-2 on penalties after drawing 1-1 through extra time in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals at Philips Stadion in Eindhoven.

The teams had drawn 1-1 in the first leg on 5 April 2005 at Lyon's Stade de Gerland, but PSV's away-goal advantage was quickly nullifed when Lyon's French forward Sylvain Wiltord scored in the 10th minute of the second leg. Brazilian center back Alex then equalized for PSV in the 50th minute. The teams failed to score in extra time, forcing the game to be decided by penalty kicks.

Through four kicks, PSV led 3-2. The deciding kick thus fell to PSV's Brazilian substitute Robert (above), who converted cleanly, putting PSV through to the semifinals, where they drew 3-3 with AC Milan. It was Milan who advanced, however, with the away-goal advantage. In the final, Milan lost to Liverpool, 2-3 on penalties after drawing 3-3 through extra time.
